Title: Game-Based Approaches and VR in CALL for Less Commonly Taught Languages
Description: Language learning is a complex task and involves a range of cognitive processes to be successful. Digital technologies are employed for commonly taught languages, but are less frequently used in the Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL) context. Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) systems can be useful for enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of both teacher-led instruction and student learning. This research blends language learning pedagogy, sociocultural theory, and Digital Game-Based Language learning (DGBLL) in the form of games or VR. CALL materials are enhanced with the aid of Natural Language Processing techniques. In this study, we look into methods for encouraging the learning and teaching of LCTLs, particularly indigenous and endangered languages. We present a DGBLL system designed to promote language learning and student engagement. The system has been used successfully in primary school classrooms, with positive feedback from both students and teachers.
