Meet Leona, a d-real student studying in Galway.
Read on to learn more about her!

Leona is an incoming 4th year PhD student at the University of Galway under the supervision of Professor Jane Walsh and co-supervisor Professor Owen Conlan, Trinity College Dublin.
Her research interests are in the design and development of an obesity education and training tool for primary care practitioners to improve the provision of care for overweight and obesity through enhancing the skill set required to do so. Leona is a strong advocate of utilising multi-stakeholder perspectives in the design of innovate digital health interventions across healthcare settings, this is reflected in her work which takes a systems approach, encompassing the experiences and needs of all the integral stakeholders. In essence Leona's work leverages behavioural science to optimise the design and uptake of an innovate intervention.

The way we interpret the world is inherently multimodal, we pull information from various sources and fuse them together to provide perception, but how does this fusion work? My research relates to investigating the influencing factors (and their consequences) on multimodal machine learning, with a particular focus on imbalance modality information, missing modality information and information disagreement.

Osteoporosis is a major disease in the world affecting more than 200 million older adults and post-menopausal women. Physical training is consider being a good non-pharmaceutical, but motivation and engagement are a major issue. To solve it, virtual rehabilitation (rehabilitation through virtuality, including augmented and virtual reality) and video games appear as a novel method. This research investigates the use of a set of exergames (exercising video games) based on physiotherapy exercises (defined with social and health care expert from the HSE) using augmented reality and full body tracking camera to improve physical and cognitive condition for people with Osteoporosis.
